Right off of Main Street, the Piedmont Center of the Arts is the cultural capital of Coos county. The three story museum features several exhibits showcasing art of all genres, natural science exhibits, and even a theater for the performance arts. A marvel of construction itself, the Center of the Arts is a beautiful sight to behold and draws in a ton of tourists, just for the architecture. The entire first floor faces the street with a giant glass wall. The white walls and columns host gorgeous paintings while pedestals and stands show off marvelous statues and sculptures.
In front of the Center is some beautiful examples of topiaries and natural art, as well as a striking fountain. Most of the town use the fountain, with its resplendent carp statue spouting choreographed streams of water, as a wishing well. Lattice work displays hybrid roses and colorful vines, creating a wonderful landscaping and architecture synergy for the front of the Center.
The second floor of the Center features most of the scientific exhibits. Physics, chemistry, botany, and biology are all explained and demonstrated by the wonderfully evocative exhibits. A super sized exhibit of entomology has been a youth crowd favorite for years now. A working assembly of Nikolai Tesla's famous coils are available for demonstration, as well as a lovely planetarium. The planetarium features a laser light show on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
The third floor features an amazingly furnished theater. Plays, musical performances, and operas are held in this gorgeously appointed theater. It holds a tremendous amount of patrons, much more than all four theaters at the Baker Street Cinema House. Unfortunately for the teenagers of Coquille, the Piedmont does not book mainstream bands or acts. They still have to play a seedy dives and bars, where most teenagers can't even get in.
