A sprawling evergreen forest rolls across Oregon wilderness, interspersed with clearings, streams, and rocky outcroppings. The woodlands extend for miles until they reach the sandy coasts of western Oregon. Little else exists out in the verdant wilderness, at least that's what the inhabitants of Coquille think.
There are several very old places where pre-Colombian inhabitants had performed arcane magics and religious rituals. These weird areas are subject to all manner of otherworldly activity. The weekend veil between this world and the supernal mirror reality has been severely weakened. Talks of strange creatures, stranger and more mysterious than even the Nightbreed, circulate around campfires and behind the safety of thick cabin walls. The legendary Bigfoot is said to exist in these woods, as well as other, more esoteric cryptids.
Caves, caverns, and even culverts make perfect hiding spots for those things that do not wish to be found. The nefarious Old Boy and his band of miscreants make their home in one of these forgotten crevices, falling upon unwary hikers like redcaps of Scottish legend. Dragging their hapless victims into the dark depths of their domains, they truly personify the monstrous reputation of the Nightbreed.
A ranger station offers sanctuary deep in the woods, manned by ex-Marine and Familiar Ranger Stanley Dawson. Though Ranger Dawson is aware of the existence of the Nightbreed, he is willing to let them be as long as they do not bring any harm to innocent hikers or depopulate the forests of game. He is happy to live and let live, and sometimes filters information to the Undercroft. This information has sometimes meant the difference between discovery and remaining hidden for the Nightbreed.
